Our present-day lives and, increasingly, our future are digital. IT is a fast-moving, incredibly exciting (in the products/services it develops) and remarkably diverse sector. It estimately contributes around £71 billion in profits to the British economy each year. Like engineering generally, IT recruitment is bedevilled by skills shortages. As well as the IT industry itself, almost every other area of the economy, from retail to finance to manufacturing, increasingly depends on IT skills and only an estimated half of the 11,000 jobs created each year are currently being filled.  This is largely due to a distinct lack of a talent pipeline coming through schools and, to a lesser extent, universities. However, it is so crucial to our future that it’s expected employment of IT professionals in Scotland will grow at 1.62% per annum until at least 2020, which is nearly twice as fast as the UK average.

All of this means it is a extremely competitive marketplace for recruiters, for both temp and perm roles. Companies strive to provide relaxed, friendly working environments, but hours, for start-ups and established businesses alike, can be long.  Teamworking is a given, but individual flair, especially in the more creative aspects of the digital world, is a fiercely sought attribute.

Positions in the industry can range from creative roles to ‘techie’ posts such as Java C#, C++, .Net etc. developers.  Then there are a multiplicity of roles in Big Data, Analytics, Architecture, Digital, Data/ERP, Infrastructure, Project/change management, Cyber-security and Business Intelligence – as well as a many graduate positions across the entire industry.

Although not initially essential, some knowledge of the technical aspects of the IT world is a major advantage. The ability to speak ‘expert-to-expert’ with clients and candidates can be developed over time, but as with most recruitment jobs, an ability to source, especially in the passive market, coupled with solid sales and interpersonal skills, will give you a head start in this rapidly expanding and lucrative market.
