This sector is one of the UK’s biggest and most popular, drawing in job-seekers from all over the country and abroad. Covering not just the obvious hotel/restaurant businesses, it also encompasses tourism and, more broadly, leisure and entertainments in general. While many people might think that candidates queue up for a job in hospitality – and there are courses at almost every FE college in the country – in reality many businesses struggle to fill specialist positions, especially at the more senior levels.

There is a very wide variety of roles to choose from, including hotel and business management, front-of-house, waiting, chefs, tour guides, leisure centre staff, cleaners, vending and pub machine sales and maintenance and many more.

This is a fast paced environment, so candidates must be able to work to tight deadlines, often at unsociable hours, as well as demonstrating first-class customer service skills.  Much of the work can be seasonal, especially in the tourist trade.

Recruiters place both temp and perm candidates in hotels, restaurants, bars, leisure facilities, tourist and conference centres etc. in positions ranging from kitchen porters, waiting staff, and bar staff to managers, chefs and supervisors.  Some agencies specialise specifically in recruiting only chefs – which, like many of the more senior jobs in hospitality and catering, is a very competitive market.
