The UK insurance industry is the largest in Europe and the third largest in the world. The leading industry organisation is the Association of British Insurers and there are over 1,000 companies authorised in the UK to write general insurance business and over 3,000 professional insurance brokers distributing it. Over 300 insurers write long-term savings, pension and protection products and the industry employs 290,000 people. There are a large number of firms with a significant presence in Scotland, such as Standard Life (which is based here), Aviva and Prudential, as well as thousands of Scottish customers utilising the insurers based in the rest of the UK.
Recruitment for the insurance industry is really varied and clients can include brokers, insurers, loss adjusters, solicitors and risk managers. The broad spectrum of roles you might handle includes underwriting, development underwriting, actuarial work (very challenging!), investment, compliance and claims management as well as a range of account handling and sales positions. It’s a really busy and diverse market to recruit for, with local, national and global vacancies and, like all the finance-related industries, it offers recruiters the opportunity to learn and develop while making good money with interesting candidates and clients.
